Ingredients for Mini Apple Pies

For Pie Crust

To make the flakiest and crispy pie crust, you will need:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Water
  • Egg

For Apple filling

  • Granny Smith or Golden Delicious Apples
  • Sugar
  • All-purpose Flour
  • Cinnamon
  • Lemon Juice
  • Unsalted Butter

Ingredient Notes and Variations

  • All-purpose salt: All-purpose salt forms the crust and gives structure to your apple pies. If you want to make your pies gluten-free, choose almond meal or hazelnut flour. These flours might give the pie a more nutty flavor. All-purpose Flour also makes the filling more voluminous.
  • Unsalted Butter: Use unsalted butter at room temperature for the best results. Butter used this way makes the crust soft and flaky when cooked.
  • Egg: One egg is mixed with 1 tbsp of water to make the egg wash. It makes the crust golden and crisp.
  • Apples: The best variety of apples is the Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples. They turn out softer, and sweeter and make a more flavorful filling.
  • Cinnamon: Powdered Cinnamon makes the flavor a sweet and spicy one. You can also use a bit of nutmeg powder in combination or a prepared mix of baking spices.
  • Lemon Juice: Lemon juice balances the sweetness of apples and spice from the baking spices. Its flavor perfectly marries with all the others.
  • Sugar: White sugar sweetens up the pie, but you can use brown sugar as a healthier option. You can also use stevia or low-calorie alternatives. The recipe also requires caster sugar to make the pie top look frosted.

How to make Mini Apple Pies?

1: Make the dough

  • In a food processor, add flour, salt, and unsalted butter. Always use butter at room temperature to ensure its proper mixing. Mix these three ingredients in the processor.
  • Gradually add water while mixing the ingredients. Stop when you achieve a slightly crumbly texture.
  • Wrap the dough in a cling film and set aside.

2: Prepare the filling

filling for Mini Apple Pies
  • Peel and cut the apples into medium-sized cubes. Put them in a mixing bowl.
  • Add all-purpose flour, cinnamon powder or baking spices, and lemon juice to the apples.
  • Mix well. Let the apples rest for 15 minutes until all the flavors mellow together

3: Assembling the pies

  • Drizzle some flour over a clean surface such as a cutting board or dough mat.
  • Place the kneaded dough and divide it into four large and four smaller sections. The larger sections will form the base of the pie while the smaller ones will fit on the top.
  • Take one larger section and flatten it up using the palm of your hand. Roll out until it becomes big enough to cover the ramekin base while the sides hang out. Roll the smaller sections in the same way.
  • Place the bottom section of the pie sheets into the form. Carefully place the apple filling inside without any moisture. Place the top layer over the filling. Seal the edges properly.
  • Poke a few holes on the top so that the steam can be released during baking.
  • Using a baking brush, give an egg wash on the top of the pie. Sprinkle caster sugar for a frosted look.

4: Baking

  • Arrange the pies in an Air fryer basket.
  • Bake the pies at 350°F (177°C) for 15 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat to 325°F (163°C) and bake for another 7 to 10 minutes.
  • When baked, remove from Air fryer and allow to cool the pies at room temperature for about 2 hours.
  • Chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours for the best taste.
  • Serve with chocolate drizzle or vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
