If I ask my grandma something about those good old, catholic holy days, there surely comes a tale associated with the delicious, lip-smacking smoked halibut fish. Remember how our moms used to smoke the fish and the lounge filled with that delicious, paprika-like aroma?

Yes, the recipe is ancient, but since I am in love with my new air fryer, I have modified the recipe a bit at my convenience. So let us refresh some of those good old times!

Ingredients For Air Fryer Halibut

You will need:

  • Halibut fish filet
  • Olive oil
  • Lemon juice
  • Fresh basil or thyme
  • Salt and black pepper

Ingredient notes and Variations

Halibut: Halibut fish originally occur in the North Atlantic, north Pacific, and north arctic oceans. Be sure to buy the taut and firm filets which have a slight white sparkly appearance.

Olive oil: Fish has good qualities of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. When cooked in olive oil, its nutritional qualities are enhanced even more, and also gives a great flavor. If you do not have olive oil, you can use sesame oil as well.

Lemon juice: lemon juice is a vital ingredient to go with the fish flavor. It incorporates a zest and tang while reducing the odor of the fish. Alternatively, you can use white vinegar.

Fresh thyme or basil: actually, you can use any herb here as per your taste. I prefer thyme or basil because of their fresh flavors. Oregano also makes a great flavor profile with lemon juice and fish.

Salt and pepper: the usual ingredients, but don’t worry if you like the spicy halibut. You can always go for cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, or chopped jalapenos for a spicier kick.

Soy sauce (optional): whenever I am in the kitchen and making a fish entree, I cannot resist adding a dash of soy sauce. It’s an optional ingredient but makes a great overall taste. Worcestershire sauce or fish sauce is a very good alternative as well.

How to make Halibut in an Air fryer?

Step one: Prepare the Marinade

  • Take a medium-sized mixing bowl and add olive oil to it.
  • Pour in lemon juice and soy sauce. Mix them well.
  • Add salt, pepper, optional spices, and fresh thyme or basil. Mix well so that all of them are thoroughly combined.

Step two: Marinate the Fish

  • Wash the fish filets and pat them dry with the help of paper towels.
  • Put the fish filets in the marinade and mix them well so that they are thoroughly coated in the oil and spices.
  • Rest the fish filets in a refrigerator for at least one hour.

Step three: Air frying the Halibut

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (205°C).
  • Line an air fryer basket with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  • Carefully place the marinated halibut filets in the basket. Be careful not to overlap the fish as it will not cook properly.
  • If you have a smaller air fryer, cook your fish in separate batches so that each filet cooks well.
  • Air fry the fish filets for at least 10 minutes. Check in between and flip the sides so that both sides become evenly crisp and golden.
  • When the fish is ready, remove it from the air fryer and serve on a platter. Garnish with fresh basil or cilantro and lemon wedges.
  • Serve with tartar sauce for a great flavor profile.
